#132 Zachariah George – From Wall Street to Funding African Startups

“At the end of the day, an idea is just an idea. An idea without implementation is worth nothing” Zachariah George.

In this episode, Grey Jabesi sat down and interviewed Zachariah George. Zach is the Co-Founder and Chief Investment Officer of Startupbootcamp Africa – the leading multi-corporate backed venture accelerator program in Africa. He is the founder of Cactus Advisors – a specialist corporate finance advisory firm and micro VC fund specializing in high growth, high impact African tech ventures. Zach is a prominent Angel investor in several of Africa’s leading tech startups including Flutterwave, HouseME, Recomed and several others. He was featured on the cover of Fast Company South Africa in May 2018.

Zach was formerly the head of Africa Investments for U-Start – the largest network of private Multi-Family offices in Europe. Prior to moving to South Africa, he was an investment banker on Wall Street covering mergers & acquisitions, corporate finance strategy and risk management at Lehman Brothers and Barclays Capital, New York.

Zach has a Master’s degree in Finance & Management from Stanford University and a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology.

Outside of his professional life, Zach is a father to 3 children and is an acoustic guitarist/vocalist with cover albums ‘Give A Little’ (2010) and ‘Humans with Hearts’ (2018) on iTunes and Spotify. He is an avid lover of theater and the performing arts likes hiking and a good game of tennis and squash. He enjoys creative writing and is currently busy finishing a work of non-fiction.

#130 Llew Claasen – How To Value Cryptocurrencies

In this episode, Grey Jabesi interviews Llew Classen. Llew is the Managing Partner of Newtown Partners, a blockchain investment and advisory services firm, founded by him and Vinny Lingham. Newtown Partners specializes in token economics, token sale design and demand generation for both their portfolio of startups and in an advisory capacity. They operate out of offices in San Francisco, U.S. and Cape Town, South Africa.

Llew is a go-to-market strategist with almost two decades of senior management experience in cryptocurrencies, digital product management and digital marketing.

He co-founded Clicks2customers (rebranded to www.nmpidigital.com) with Vinny Lingham, now a global digital marketing agency with annual billings in excess of $100 million and Synthasite (rebranded to www.yola.com). Llew is also the Executive Director of the Bitcoin Foundation, the original, the oldest and the largest Bitcoin advocacy organization globally, headquartered in San Francisco, U.S. The Bitcoin Foundation coordinates the efforts of the members of the Bitcoin community, helping to create awareness of the benefits of Bitcoin, how to use it and its related technology requirements, for technologists, regulators, the media and everyone else globally.

Llew has a Masters Degree in the Management of Technology & Innovation and lives in Cape Town, South Africa.

#78 NHIAL MAJOK – SOLVING AFRICA’S PROBLEMS WITH BLOCKCHAIN

Nhial Majok started with humble beginnings in Sudan. The Sudanese war was at it’s peak by the time he was 10 which forced him to move around various East African countries to attain a good education. He later moved to Australia.

Nhial has worked in IT for over 8 years both with the Australian government and in the private sector, providing system support for large clients for IBM Australia. He has experience in small and large organizations to the table informing the company as well as his passion for financial innovation given his understanding of Australian economic theory.

He is now working on PESABASE, a low remittance, payments and banking for Africa. The platform is being built on OmisegoGo Blockchain platform.

I happened to link up with an award winning StartUp that developed GEM, which is a mobile rewards platform for volunteers in South Africa.
The first session was with David Shields who is a co-founder of GEM and the second session was with Danielle Jarvis who is a Project Coordinator.

Besides GEM, Danielle is a Couchsurfer, Managing Director of SailPro, High Performance Sailing Coach and Psychology post-graduate so I had alot to learn from her in those areas. We talked about Couchsurfing, travel experiences, sailing and opinions on education since she’s a teacher.
