#101 Charles Hoskinson & John O’Connor (Cardano)

In this interview. Grey Jabesi interviews Charles Hoskinson, well known as Co-founder of Cardano and Ethereum. Also featuring, was John O’Connor who is the Director of African Operations for Input Output(The parent company behind Cardano). This interview was recorded in johannesburg South Africa, where Charles was attending Africa Blockchain Conference which was hosted by Tumelo Ramaphosa.

Charles Hoskinson is a Colorado-based technology entrepreneur and mathematician. He attended Metropolitan State University of Denver and University of Colorado Boulder to study analytic number theory before moving into cryptography through industry exposure.

His professional experience includes founding three cryptocurrency-related start-ups – Invictus Innovations, Ethereum and IOHK – and he has held a variety of posts in both the public and private sectors. He was the founding chairman of the Bitcoin Foundation’s education committee and established the Cryptocurrency Research Group in 2013.

John O’connor joined IOHK after working for the Cardano Foundation as the Head of Strategy and Communications. He worked from pre-launch on a variety of business areas, including community building, communications, exchange integration, and business strategy.

John began his career working at an investment firm focused on African development. With mixed Ethio-Irish heritage, he is particularly interested in how blockchain can enhance transparency and enable business in sub-Saharan African economies. John graduated from Oxford University with a degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics. He lives between Addis Ababa and London.

Dr. Michael Jordaan, MCom, Ph.D., is the Founder of MonteGray Capital. Dr. Jordaan serves as Partner at AngelHub Ventures. He has more than 20 years’ experience in the financial services sector. He served as the Chief Executive Officer at First National Bank, Plc until December 31, 2013.

He had a decade of experience working at the First National Bank, Plc. At FNB, he oversaw the move away from traditional banking toward rewarding ecosystem-centric solutions for customers. He has been an Independent Non-Executive Director of JSE Limited since January 1, 2014. Dr. Jordaan is the recipient of the CNBC Africa Business Leader of the Year for Southern Africa award.

#55 BARATANG MIYA – TEACHING GIRLS TO CODE

Baratang Miya is the CEO of GirlHYPE Coders that empowers girls to pursue careers in STEM and had been chosen by the US State Dept’s in 2015 TechWomen program as an Emerging Leader. She was placed at Adobe for mentorship during her TechWomen 2015 award.

She also serve on the Silicon Cape Exco as head of Transformation. She was the 1st runner up for MTN Women In ICT Community Builder Award 2016.

She partnered with organisations like UN Women, Mozilla, TechWomen, SiliconCape and Technovation to develop women’s digital literacy and participating on the web.

She is also a judge for the Inspiring50 brought to SA by #cocreateSA.

EP#39 ROBYN FARAH – Kick Ass Technology – Obviously!

Robyn Farah, CEO of KATO is an Entrepreneur, speaker & people connector in tech & innovation.

Her company focuses on product development to solve real world problems in order to create a better world. She also founded and run some of the most influencial tech events and communities in South Africa which create exposure to and connect people who are pushing the boundaries of tech, as well as bridging the class and gender gap. These include #TechTalkCPT, Arduino Cape Town, Modern Alchemists and Women in Tech Cape Town. She’s a partner in Curiosity Campus, which taught people all sorts of tech skills from Python, building a robot to creating VR environments.

In 2016 she was listed as one of Mail&Guardian’s 200 Young South Africans and granted a Shuttleworth Flash Grant. In 2015 she was invited to be a guest lecturer at MIT and to attend the World Maker Faire in New York. She completed her Masters in Interactive Sound Installations at the Sonic Arts Research Center at Queen’s University.

EP#35 PAUL SNODGRASS – COMEDY, ACTING & AWESOMENESS

Paul Snodgrass (@Snoddie) is an actor and comedian based in Cape town. He has worked on several movie projects including Black Sails, The Odyssey and Dominion. He is also popular for “I’m so lonely” , one of his stand-up end bits.

He started his career at the fresh faces section of the Smirnoff International Comedy Festival. He is best known for his work on eTV’s “That Sport Show” and for his work as reporter and producer for eTV Sports News. He has also successfully performed for many corporate clients and he has quickly made a name for himself as a multi-talented stand-up comedian and MC for many SA rock bands.
